Pine cones have been used as a winter decoration for more than 3,000 years. It became the holiday icon we know today when Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, brought the first Christmas tree to Windsor Castle in 1846 and decorated it with pinecones, dried fruit and candle lights. The English court was captivated and the tree and cone tradition quickly spread across Europe and North America.
